Lac au Duc (Brittany) - Convergence and exchanges with farmers around the Interreg CPES project

This Friday, December 13, 2019, the partners of the French case study of Lac au Duc (SMGBO, Rennes 1 University and CNRS) presented alongside local partners (Chamber of Agriculture, mayor of Guilliers and Ali'Homme) project to create an experimental Payments for Environmental Services area in the Guilliers area.
More than thirty people were around the table to discuss without taboos on the implementation of Payments for Environmental Services (PES) as tools for protection and recovery of water quality.
Starting from the presentation of the inventory of water quality, the levers that can be used to reduce the diffusion of phosphorus in the soil and the PES mechanism, the debate this morning made it possible to identify ten of farmers willing to co-construct the project.
Farmers, researchers, leaders, elected officials took turns speaking, questioning at the same time the sustainability of PES, the recognition of the peasant effort, collective and territorial commitment, and the return of peasant common sense. Eventful, impactful and at the same time without taboos, this debate had the merit of providing answers and creating new questions. These conclusions will be the work to be put in place in 2020 to lead to a contractualization of PSE and the creation of a real experimental territory in Guilliers.
